How to use ChatGPT (and other AI chatbots): a beginner's guide

New to AI chatbots? This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to start, what to type, how to get better answers, and what never to share. It works the same way for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot.

Step 1: Pick a chatbot and sign in

Popular choices are ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. All of them have a free plan that is enough to learn. Open the website or app, sign in, and you will see one text box. That box is where you type your request, called a prompt.

Step 2: Ask your first question

Type the way you would talk to a helpful expert. Start simple:

Explain what inflation is in simple words, with one example from daily life in India.

Press Enter. The answer appears word by word, because the AI writes one small piece (a token) at a time.

Step 3: Continue the conversation

The chatbot remembers what you said earlier in the same chat. So you can refine instead of starting again:

Step 4: Use the 5-part prompt formula for better answers

Good prompts give the AI five things: a role, the context, the exact task, the format you want, and any limits.

You are a friendly career counsellor. I am a B.Com final-year student who likes numbers.
Suggest 3 careers that use AI, as a table with columns: role, skills needed, first step.
Keep it under 150 words.

Step 5: Check the answer

AI can sound confident and still be wrong (this is called a hallucination). For anything important, ask it for sources, open them, and double-check names, numbers and dates.

Five useful things to try today

  1. Summarise a long article: paste it and ask for 5 key points.
  2. Write a polite email to your landlord or manager.
  3. Plan a week of healthy vegetarian meals on a budget.
  4. Explain an error message from your phone or laptop.
  5. Practise English: ask it to correct your sentences and explain each fix.

Lesson learned

A chatbot is a fast first helper, not the final word. Ask clearly, refine in the same chat, and check anything important.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes, ChatGPT has a free plan. Paid plans add faster, more capable models and higher limits.

Does the AI remember my chats?

Inside one chat it uses what you said before. Whether chats are saved or used for training depends on the app and your settings, so check its privacy settings.

Which chatbot is best for beginners?

Any of the big ones is fine to learn with. The skills - clear prompts and checking answers - work in all of them.
